A Mamas Guide To Decluttering Your House

Let’s be honest, as parents we can accumulate way too much stuff. Baby stuff turns into a toddler stuff turns into a little kid stuff. The stuff just doesn’t end. Every birthday the kiddos get more toys, every Christmas the family spoils the heck out of them. I’m not complaining, I am so grateful that we are blessed with such an amazing family and with amazing things, but it can become a lot of clutter in your house over time. Recently Nick and I spent hours decluttering our house. We had just found out about the miscarriage so we decided that we were going to put all infant stuff in storage for now. We ordered heavy duty storage bags on Amazon so that the oddly shaped items could fit in the bags for storage and be kept safe. You know, the things like the Bumbo chair, the jumper that hangs in the doorway, the infant bathtub, etc. It cleared out so much room to be able to take those out of the closet, put them into the storage bags and put them in storage. We are personally keeping most of our baby stuff because we are hoping to have more precious kiddos in the future. For those of you mamas who are done having kids and ready to purge anything and everything infant and toddler, I have the most amazing tip for you that I will get you here in a second! Another thing that we did while decluttering our house was we poured out all of Giulian’s toy boxes in toy bins and went through and took out all of the infant toys. We were shocked that we literally had not done this his entire 2 1/2 years of being alive and there were so many infant toys mixed in with the toddler toys. We filled up quite a few bags and put those in storage as well. We also decided to get rid of quite a bit and donated it, there was a lot of stuff that we just didn’t feel like we wanted to keep for our second child.
There were a few larger items that we decided to sell. We sold them on Facebook marketplace and honestly it was a bigger pain in the butt than it was a profit. Trying to coordinate with the people to find a time when they could come pick up the item turned into us leaving the item on the porch several times and nobody showing up. One lady even skimped us five dollars when we told her to put the money in the mailbox. It can just be such a pain in the butt to sell your stuff online but in the end it’s nice to have it out if your house.
I recently discovered a company called Good Buy Gear and I am totally wishing that I knew about this before we went through our whole purging session! Good Buy Gear will come to your house (in Denver and Dallas), pick up your gently used baby or toddler items, clean them up and sell them for you. Once they sell your item they will send you a check, PayPal or you can even get in-store credit to buy new items for your kids. Are you kidding me?! How brilliant is that! I absolutely wish I knew about this program a few months ago. That is so much more simple than the whole Facebook marketplace selling or craigslist. Nobody wants to deal with the creepers from craigslist anyways right?
Good Buy Gear is a mama owned company that started in Denver 3 years ago. They are a full-service marketplace for buying and selling baby and kid gear. They even have what they call a “white glove service” where they will come to your house and pick up your gently used strollers, car seats, toys, baby carriers, bouncer, walkers, etc! I had the chance to tour their warehouse here in Denver and I loved that they have “wingmoms” that check the quality and safety of all the items that people want to sell. I got to see these mamas in action and I was so impressed at how thorough they were. Sometimes when you shop on craigslist or marketplace it’s hit or miss with the quality, we’ve even picked up items before that have smelt like cigarette smoke and had to just not use the item, it was so awkward. These wingmoms inspect each item with the mindset of “would I want my kid using this or playing with this”.
Although our mind has been on decluttering, we did pick up a toy for Giulian while we were at Good Buy Gear. He spotted this Paw Patrol toy and was obsessed with it. We had actually been looking at that toy online months ago for Christmas but it was $75 retail and we had already purchased most of Giulian’s gifts at that point so we decided against it even though we knew he would love it. They had the same exact thing at Good Buy Gear but for $25!! Y’all it looks new! We are so thrilled, Giulian has been playing with this thing nonstop since we took it home a few days ago and it brings so much joy to us to see him so happy. We told him it’s a present for doing such an amazing job with potty training.
I honestly don’t think I’ll buy many things new anymore, after seeing all of the items at their warehouse that look brand new and are a fraction of the cost! Not to mention it’s amazing for the environment if we can get in a habit of recycling and using older products instead of letting them end up in a landfill somewhere. Back on the topic of decluttering our home, it feels so good to have things more organized now and overall less items taking up space in our closets, office and living room. Clutter really can make you feel overwhelmed at times and it feels amazing to have less clutter in our home. We like to purge and organize four times a year if we can.
